Seashells of the World (Golden Guides)
Published in Hardcover by Goldencraft (December, 1991)
Author: R. Tucker Abbott
Average review score:

This is the book that got me started.
Yes it's way out of date. Yes the super rare shells listed in the book are often no longer even mildly rare. Yes it is drawings only. Sigh. But this is the book that got me and all too many others hooked into this area. 30 years later I still love the hobby. Give it to a child and watch him/her grow.

loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was a great book. I collect all of loraine snelling's books.I loved the part when Trish won her first race since her dad died.I think everyone should read this book.I think that if everyone did read this book the universe would be a better place. All of my friends love this book and we all agree that there should be another book to add to the series, about maybe Trish and Red getting married. It would be so cool if they had their wedding in the barn with all of the horses. Take me to your leader!

O'Keeffe's favorite
In the 1970's when I worked with Georgia O'Keeffe as her eyesight was failing, she asked me to read this book to her four times. Some passages she listened to over and over.

Secrets of the Golden Dawn Cypher Manuscript
Published in Paperback by The Church of the Hermetic Sciences, Inc. (15 March, 1997)
Authors: Carroll Poke Runyon and Poke Runyon
Average review score:

The Whole Nine Yards, and Then Some!
There have been several books on the Golden Dawn Cipher Manuscript. I have two others besides this one--but what this one does that the others don't do, is actually explain what the cipher (cypher) manuscript is all about. And the author does this grade-by-grade so you can follow along in the Golden Dawn and see where everything comes from. On top of that, Runyon presents the best defense of W. Wynn Westcott I've read yet. He makes us wonder just what kind of an axe Ellic Howe was grinding!

Also Runyon has some fascinating appendices on the "Eleven Sphere Tree" in the Ciphers (nobody else has this that I know of). Then, as a special addition: we have R.A. Gilbert's great article on Wynn Westcott's Cipher Notes. What a feast for Golden Dawn buffs! If you are going to get a book on the G.D. Ciphers, this is the only one you'll ever need.

Sesame Street Elmo's Guessing Game (A Golden Sturdy Shape Book)
Published in Hardcover by Golden Pr (September, 1993)
Authors: Constance Allen, Tom Brannon, and Golden
Average review score:

fun, helps kids learn, nice drawings
A series of six guessing games. The first is "Elmo is thinking of something that you wear in the snow", accompanied by pictures of five different things -- one is the right answer. The game continues in this style. Very simple, great for learning to name and identify objects.

Sharks
Published in Paperback by Golden Books (July, 1998)
Author: Golden Books
Average review score:

Sharks! Sharks! & More Sharks!
This book is an excellent learning tool for all ages about sharks. Within this book you learn about roughly nineteen different sharks. You learn how sharks move, where they live, about their teeth, and interesting facts about them. The part that I liked was how they try to bring to scale how big things are on a shark compared to a human. For example, did you know that "a great white shark has bigger teeth than any other shark. Each tooth is about the same size as your hand."

At the end of this book, they list "fast facts" about some of the sharks. Within that information they list the size of their teeth, food they eat, and an amazing fact, along with other things. At the very end of the book they have a "Puzzle" section, which tests what you have learned.

I bought this book for my young daughter, for when she gets older to learn from. However, I must admit I learned a few things from reading it first. I would also recommend the following books in the series: Dinosaurs, Insects, and Snakes.

I hope that this review was helpful to you. Again, this is a wonderful learning tool for a person of any age.

Signs of Spring

My "First Little Golden Book"
"Martha's House" is the first, "First Little Golden Book" that I recall from my childhood. I acctually still have it today, with its back cover missing. It sure was and still is a well loved book. "Martha's House" has its own story in my family. While cooking lunch recently with my six aunts, we were all discussing our favorite books. Of coarse, I said, "My favorite book would have to be "Martha's House." My aunts all turned around and looked at me as if I had exposed some deep dark secret of theirs. Then they all just bursted out laughing. While I was standing there in awe, my aunt Ellen explained this,... One day, her husband, Mike was babysitting my cousin Catherine. Catherine was around 2 or 3 at the time, and "Martha's House" was her favorite book too. Anyway, He made the mistake and told Catherine, "No!" Catherine was one of those children that had never heard the word "No" before, so naturally she threw a fit. She ended up hiding under his bed and refused to come out unless he would read "Martha's House." Poor Uncle Mike had to read her that book about 50 times that day. Ever since then, Uncle Mike looks sick if you even mention the book. "Martha's House" written by Edith Kunhardt, is a precious children's book. It has friendly illustations by Carolyn Bracken. If you have ever read it, you know it doesn't tell story, but it does invite you into Martha's house to eye all that she wants to show. I love this book even as a teenager today. I will always love it and hope to pass it to my children one day. I suggest that you buy it for any girl of any age, and they will love it and treasure it forever, because it allows us all to remember home.
